News from East Timor
As you know, one of our aims is to support coffee growers in East Timor. This year their country has been seriously affected by drought, which has reduced their crop by 60 per cent. This means we'll soon be running short of supplies, with the next crop not available for about nine months. Our current supplies of East Timor coffee should continue until February 2008. We have every intention of continuing to provide a market for these growers, but in the interim we can supply our Partners in Fair Trade (you!) with a high quality Ethiopian Fair Trade Organic Djimmah coffee. The plan is to move to the Ethiopian coffee in February 2008, when the new order form (enclosed) comes into effect. The Ethiopian coffee will be available in the same (new, see-through-backed, resealable) packaging as the East Timor.
The Djimmah coffee comes from a co-operative in the Oromia region in Ethiopia and is certified organic by BCS Oko Garantie Numberg, Germany. It's delicious - similar in taste to the East Timor coffee - and we feel it makes an ideal substitute. By buying this coffee, we are continuing to support smallholder farmers, and 70 per cent of the net profit made by this particular co-op is used in the region for building schools, health centres and basic infrastructure, such as water supplies.
If you have been enjoying the East Timor coffee, we are confident that you'll find the coffee from Ethiopia equally delightful. Our tasters were impressed. Do give us a ring or drop us an email if you'd like to know anything more about this coffee, or any other PFFT products.
As soon as the usual East Timor bean supply is scheduled for arrival (anticipated in September 2008) we’ll let you know!
